Mazu, also known as the Virgin Mary in Heaven, the Queen of the Sea, the Mother of Meizhou, etc. His original surname was Lin Mo. He was born in Shanglin Village (Today's Tianfei Hometown Site Park) in Meizhou Island (Island) in Putian, Fujian Province in the first year of Song Jianlong (the 23rd of the third lunar month in 960 AD). He died in the fourth year of Song Yongxi (987 AD) on the ninth day of September. Mazu is a belief in the sea god centered on the southeastern coast of China. It evolved from the belief in witches and wizards in the Fujian and Yue regions of China and from real people and real things. In the process of development, it absorbed other folk beliefs. With the expansion of its influence and the suggestions and advocacy of local officials, the Northern Song Dynasty began to be devilized and was called Mazu (the honorific title of female ancestors by local people). She was built and worshipped in temples. After Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty, she was granted the title of Lady Linghui, becoming a god recognized by the court. Mazu has experienced 36 awards and honours from 22 emperors in the four dynasties of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Her titles range from Lady to Consort, Tianfei, Tianhou and even the Virgin of Heaven. She is the person with the most titles (36 times) and the longest number of words (64 words) in China history. In the end, it gradually stood out from many sea gods and became the image representative of China's marine culture. As the influence of Mazu expanded, the belief in Mazu spread from Fujian to Zhejiang, Guangdong, Taiwan, Ryukyu, Japan, and Southeast Asia.(Such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia) and other places, Tianhou Temple or Mazu Temple is distributed along the coast of Beijing, Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Shandong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong and Macao, and it is also distributed in inland provinces of China such as Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, etc. As of March 2024, there are tens of thousands of Mazu palaces, temples and cultural institutions in 50 countries and regions around the world, with nearly 300 million followers. On September 30, 2009, initiated by the Board of Directors of Mazu Ancestral Temple in Meizhou, and with the help of Mazu Palace and Temple at home and abroad,"Mazu Faith in Customs" was included in the list of representative works of human intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, becoming my country's first world intangible cultural heritage.
